Seven can’t miss winter and holiday events at Discovery Green
After a burning summer, winter has finally arrived. Although our lovely Houston weather is still spotty, the spirit of December is impenetrable. Christmas lights are sprouting as we speak, trucks continue to drive by with pine trees in their bed, men and women wrap themselves in fluffy scarves, and the mall is even more claustrophobic than usual. Just in time for the holidays, Discovery Green’s seasonal calendar is packed with a range of activities for all ages. Here are just seven of their amazing treats:
1. Ice Skating
Every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m., during the winter season, experience “Jazz on Ice,” a time where families and friends can come out and skate to a live Jazz band. While Fridays, from 7-10 p.m., ice skaters can swoosh to electronic music—from old school disco to nostalgic house music. Both days are free and open to the public.
2. Movie Screenings
Come watch a free movie every Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. with your friends and family or make it a romantic night out with that sweet significant other. On December 15th family friendly “Polar Express” is playing and December 29th features either “Home Alone” for all the children of the 90’s or 2011’s “Smurfs.” All screenings are outdoors so bring a blanket.
Until January 18th, Discovery Green will be offering free Zumba lessons at the park. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday, learn to move in a Latin-inspired dance fitness program. An ACE certified personal trainer will have you sweating out the holiday calories and keep you healthy in a friendly atmosphere.
4. Gospel on the Green
From noon to 2 p.m. on December 11th, Gospel musicians will perform for free. Local restaurant, The Grove will be offering the audience the option of eating a delicious brunch buffet for $27 while listening to the musicians. The buffet includes migas, fried pork chops, shrimp and grits, jalapeno pork sausage, sticky buns, and fruit. Or you can have bottomless mimosas for $35.
5. Public Poetry in the Park
On December 17th from noon to 6 p.m., in partnership with Houston Public library, Houston natives will be reading their poetic masterpieces. Come out with your curious ears and get some literary stimulation going on.
6. Discovery Green Flea Market
Also on December 17th, same time as Public Poetry, venture over to Discovery Green’s very own Flea Market—a place where you can hunt for antiques and random treasures. Some of the items that will be present include vintage furniture, linens from around the world, a variety of wines, vintage books including collectibles and some signed by their respective authors, a collection of the nostalgic VHS, creative and homemade jewelry including earrings made from bottle caps, homemade Southern desserts, and so many more unique, found objects.
7. Dirty Dozen: Ice Sculpting Competition
And finally, on Saturday, January 7th, from 10 a.m. – 5:30 pm come out and be part of Discovery Green’s 4thAnnual Ice Sculpting Competition, featuring one dozen acclaimed ice artists from around the country. They will be using chainsaws and blow torches to transform ice into works of art. DJ Caps One will be providing live music the entire time. Once again, free.
