A new genre of music: Spanish with an English ‘swag’ to it
Bringing the hip-hop style to the Latino genre, The Hooligans are mixing rap, hip-hop, R&B, Spanish singing, Spanish rap, reggaeton and even a little bit of dub step. 22-year-old Dandoez and 21-year-old Guap are pursing their passion for music to impact their listeners’ lives.
“There have been so many things that could have absolutely crushed us but yet we keep pushing,” Guap said. “We want people to be able to listen to our music and feel inspired or motivated. At the same time we’re making music for our youth and our generation because at the end of the day everyone just wants to have a good time.”
The Hooligans had their start in Los Angeles in early 2011. They’ve performed around the city and look forward to expanding their performances to Houston. Both Dandoez and Guap were born in L.A. and Dandoez has continued to live there his whole life. Guap, Eddie Jimenez moved to the suburbs of Houston when he was fourteen and graduated high school there.
Ever since the age of twelve, Dandoez knew that music was his calling. Guap started pursuing acting at the age of 18 and graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy with his BFA in 2011.
“I’ve been an entertainer my whole life. I seriously started pursuing acting at the age of 18, which eventually lead me to my love and passion of music,” Guap said. “Our passion for music is more than a passion, it’s a lifestyle.”
The music industry, especially in L.A., is not always easy. The Hooligans have experienced struggles that could have stopped them.
“Being homeless, and not knowing if we were going to eat some days couldn’t kill our love and passion for music, because even through those extremely hard times, we still kept recording and making hits,” Guap said.
The music produced by The Hooligans reflects on both Dandoez and Guap lives, they feel that the most important thing in life is not about finding their purpose in life, but about the journey that gets them there. Through that journey, they aim to get to their main goal in life.
“For both of us it’s to have a family again. Both of us have shattered homes and families. Music in a way, actually helps fill that void so much actually that it’s beyond belief,” Guap said.
Following their dreams and making their mark in the music industry, The Hooligans main message is for people to enjoy life through music.
“Have fun people, stop trying to kill each other and vibe to some good music. Grab your girl, grab your boys, grab your family, your pets, and just have a good time,” Guap said. You don’t have to fit a certain mold or look a certain way to do what you want to do in life. Rules are meant to be broken, but only if you’re breaking them to build something better.”
