Today, Texas Democrats released their party platform and try to steal the spotlight back from the Texas Republicans.

The platform, adopted the same day of its release, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to repeal the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, the Texas Defense of Marriage Act and the Texas Constitutional Marriage Amendment.

Texas Republicans garnered national attention in early June when delegates endorsed reparative therapy for gays which is illegal in two states. GOP committee members had to clarify their stance after news of their platform went viral.

Reparative therapy, also known as conversion therapy, is a treatment that aims to turn gays straight.

Democrats opposed any use of public funding for reparative therapy and called on the Texas Department of State Health Services to investigate anyone who engages in the controversial treatment.

“Governor Perry, if you believe gay people need repairing, then I would suggest your soul needs repairing,” said San Antonio Rep. Joaquin Castro.
