In a weekend that is supposed to be Texas Southern University’s time to shine, the Alcorn State University Braves have made their own plans to crash the party. Coming into this weekend’s SWAC Championship, TSU only needed one important scenario to promise their ticket into the NCAA tournament, Alcorn State to win.

Alcorn State needed to beat Southern University Jaguars in a Friday night match up to help TSU advance into the group of 64 at the NCAA tournament. SU came in the defending SWAC champions and wanted to upset TSU’s tournament chances again. This year unfortunately SU failed.

The Braves started the game off slow, falling behind 7-4 in the opening moments until freshman guard Maurice Howard started to catch fire scoring and along with teammates junior forward Reginal Johnson, senior forward Marquis Vance and junior guard A.J. Mosby.

Johnson and Vance both had double-doubles. Johnson had a game high 18 points with 10 rebounds, and Vance contributed with 14 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Howard added 13 points and Mosby had an offensive explosion with 15 points in the second half.

Alcorn St power on the inside and smooth shooting from the outside prove too much for SU to handle. Southern had consistent offensive production from senior guard Shawn Prudhomme who ended the game with a team high 16 points. It was not enough to stop the Braves from dominating.

The Braves defeated the Jags 81-59. Alcorn St. will meet Texas Southern for the SWAC Championship. The Braves will not take their match-up against TSU lightly, they are on a mission to be the top team in the SWAC and will not let the Tigers top ranking stop them from trying to bring home the SWAC championship.
