In their quest to capture the SWAC Championship and a potential spot in the NCAA Tournament, Texas Southern University Tigers met Grambling State University Tigers Friday evening for a SWAC semi-final match up.

Leading the charge junior guard Jalan McCloud had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals. SWAC freshman of the year Trae Jefferson added 14 points, four rebounds, four assist and two steals.

TSU lead the contest from the open tip with a 14 to 5 run in the first two and a half minutes on the game. Early on, the TSU Tigers had control of the game with great team chemistry. They ended the half up 29-19.

After halftime, GSU Tigers led by guard Ervin Mitchell came back and took the lead from TSU with 9 minutes left in the half. That lead didn’t last long as SWAC Player and New Comer of the Year, Zach Lofton, made key defensive and offensive plays to get Texas Southern the lead, despite fouling out the game.

“Even when they went into a zone, we made some plays, we drive to the basket, we made it to the free throw line, we were fortunate to make some plays.” Says TSU head coach Mike Davis.

TSU beat Grambling St. 62-57. TSU has the SWAC regular season title and is set to make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015. They play in the SWAC Championship Game Saturday evening.
