Ruben Vargas is an alumnus of the University of Houston who’s using his passion for soccer to raise money for students. He’s been an avid fan of soccer and was raised playing it since he was four. He is part of the UH Alumni and is coordinating the soccer tournament to raise money for scholarships in an effort to give back to the Hispanic community at the University of Houston. He wants students to enjoy everything that the college life has to offer.

What gave you the idea to start a soccer tournament to raise funds for a scholarship?

The Hispanic community on campus doesn’t have a division one soccer team so that came to mind when we were brainstorming on ways to raise scholarship funds for the Latino community. One of the ideas we came up with was soccer. Last year we had a good turnout, I believe we raised like $3,000. Our goal this year is $5,000.

What was your favorite memory from U of H?

Back in 2011 when we had Case Keenum as our quarterback, I called it the golden years. It was a great experience being able to share the atmosphere with my fraternity brothers and friends.

Do you still follow the Home team?

I do, I’m a season ticket holder at the University of Houston. I sponsor two alumni students to come to the game so they are able to come to the games as well.”

Can any minority or undocumented students apply for the scholarship

The scholarship is open to anyone that is enrolled at the University of Houston. There are no special requirements that state you have to be a resident or a US citizen. Anyone that applies is an eligible recipient.”
