Savannah Heebner shut outs Wichita State in series opener
Saannah Heebner throws her eighth complete-game against Wichita State Shockers Friday night at Cougars Softball Stadium.
The Colorado native tossed a four-hitter to improve to 17-6. Heebner retired nine-straight between the third and sixth innings, issued no walks and recorded four strikeouts.
Although she showed her pitching prowess, Heebner is not shy to stop up in the batter’s box.
Leading the Shockers 1-0, the Cougars added four runs in the third.
With one out, Heebner singled into left center to score Arielle James and Kaylin Crumpton. Kelli Montgomery followed with an infield single to score Queen, and an error on the play allowed Heebner to come around for a 5-0 advantage.
Hitting for herself, Heebner finished 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and one run scored.
Heebner, however, was not the only Cougars to give the Shockers a shocking experience at home as Montgomery joined Heebner with a triple – the first of her career – and two RBI as part of a 2-for-3 performance in Houston’s, 7-0, victory against Wichita State.
The Cougars improve to 26-15 and 5-5 in the American after Friday night’s win against the Shockers – who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
The Cougars will face the Shockers Saturday afternoon at 2pm at Cougars Softball Stadium.
