The Venture, the only multi-university collegiate newspaper that has a circulation of 4,000.
The newspaper dates back to 2009 when it began as a news website under the name uhelgato.com. Months after it was launched, the website was nominated by the Associated Collegiate Press for Online Newspaper of the Year.
The quick success of uhelgato.com spurred the staff of El Gato, as the organization was then called, to expand the scope and aim to become a multi-platform media corporation reaching college students nationwide.
In Spring 2010, El Gato became EGMN (El Gato Media Network) and piloted a print version of the website named The Venture. The name was chosen to reflect the unprecedented task at hand. Never before had a group of Latino collegiate journalists created and sustained a multi-university bilingual newspaper independent of any university or college.
The newspaper officially launched in August 2010. Currently, The Venture is distributed at seven college campuses in the Houston area.
Coverage includes news, sports, events, entertainment and in-depth investigative articles.
Other subsidiaries of EGMN include:
- The Overtime Page – Sports
- 1394 – Broadcast/video production
